Sarah Fisher/ Auto Racing

Sarah Fisher is the most successful female race car driver in the IRL IndyCar Series. In 2001, she took second at Homestead-Miami, not only a career best, but the best by a woman in the IndyCar Series. In August 2002, she became the youngest and first woman to ever win a pole in a major league open-wheel race in North American motorsports history by capturing the MBNA pole at the Kentucky Speedway. She led the first 26 laps of the race and finished eighth. In April 2002, she substituted for injured driver Robbie Buhl at the Indy Racing League (IRL) race in Nazareth, Pa., where she finished fourth. Fisher was hired as a teammate for Buhl in the No.23 car for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, where she became the fastest woman ever at Indy with a four-lap qualifying average of more than 229 miles per hour. She was voted the IndyCar Series' Most Popular Driver for three consecutive seasons (2001, 2002, 2003) only two years after making her debut in auto racing at the age of 19, making her the youngest in league history, before heading to NASCAR. Raised in Commercial Point, Ohio, Fisher began racing at the age of five. Her parents played a significant part in her passion for the sport, as they both had racing backgrounds. She graduated in 1999 from Teays Valley High School where she was a four-year honor roll student. She currently attends Ellis College in NYC online as a part-time student while also competing in a full racing schedule in the IndyCar Series.
